Fans on X (formerly known as Twitter) reacted after the India National Cricket Team 37-year-old off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin replaced the 29-year-old spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel in India’s World Cup 2023 squad.

India were forced to make a late change in the 15-man squad as Axar Patel failed to recover from the injury he sustained during the Asia Cup 2023 in Sri Lanka. The left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder had suffered a left quadriceps strain during India’s Asia Cup Super Four clash against Bangladesh.

The 29-year-old was expected to recover in time for the marquee tournament and he was also selected in the squad for the third match of the recently concluded three-match ODI series against the Australia National Cricket Team.

However, Axar Patel was ruled out of the match against Australia and now he will miss the World Cup as well. After Axar got injured, India included Washington Sundar and Ravichandran Ashwin in the squad for the ODI series against the Australia National Cricket Team to have a backup ready.

Ashwin played the first two games of the series for India after making a comeback to the format after 20-plus months and registered figures of 1/47 and 3/41. He was replaced by Washington Sundar in the third game and the young all-rounder scored 18 and had the bowling figures of 0/48.

After the trials in the Australia ODIs, Ravichandran Ashwin was finally picked as the replacement for Axar and will join Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja as spinners in India’s World Cup squad. Ashwin is likely to feature in India’s playing XI in spin-friendly conditions and bat at the No.8 position.

Meanwhile, India will begin their World Cup campaign on October 8 against Australia in Chennai. Before the tournament, India will play two warm-ups, the first against England on September 30 and the next against the Netherlands on October 3.
