Former England captain Michael Vaughan gave his verdict on England’s batting in the ongoing 2nd Test of Ashes 2023 at Lord’s. Michael Vaughan feels that England started well with entertaining batting but later showcased a miserable show in the final moments.

In the 1st innings, Australia slammed a marvelous total of 416-10. England started well with a 91-run opening stand by Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, who hit 48 and 98 respectively. Later, Ollie Pope and Duckett etched a partnership of 97-run stand for the 2nd wicket. However, England lost 4 wickets for 278 by the end of Day 2.

That Is Not Entertaining: Michael Vaughan On England’s Batting

During a conversation about England’s batting in BBC Test Match Special, former England all-rounder Michael Vaughan said that England executed proper stokes at the start of the innings but later showed stupidity.

“For the first 182 runs, I saw an England side that went out to bat and play with great entertainment because they played proper cricket strokes. What came after that for the next hour or so was absolute stupidity.

That is not entertaining, I’m sorry, that is stupid Test match cricket and Australia will be delighted with that method because when the ball is not swinging over the next few weeks, guess what they are going to do.”, the 48-year-old commentator said.

Michael Vaughan, who played over 80 Tests and ODIs for England, hailed Zak Crawley for his beautiful batting show as an opener.

“Zak Crawley has just done what Zak Crawley does. Plays nicely, plays beautifully, you think come on, it’s your day. He gets to 48 and then just gifts an easy wicket. That’s the problem with this England side …. they don’t realise when they’re on top,” said Michael Vaughan, who played for England from 199 to 2008.

England, who reached 278-4 till the stumps of day 2, trails by 138 runs with 6 wickets in their kitty. Harry Brook (45*) and Ben Stokes (17*) take the strike. England star Joe Root failed to come up with a good knock this time, getting out of 10 runs.

Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Cameron Green, and Nathan Lyon picked 1 wicket each for the Aussies. Earlier, Australia posted a gigantic total of 416-10 in 1st innings after being asked to bat first. Steve Smith (110) came up with a marvelous ton in the match while Travis Head smacked 77 runs.
