AUS vs ENG: James Anderson Is A Champion But Not At His Best Right Now Feels Ricky Ponting

James Anderson

Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting feels James Anderson is not at his best right now in the ongoing Ashes 2023 series. However, Ricky Ponting also pointed out that the English pacer James Anderson is a champion of the game.

Right-arm pacer James Anderson has scalped 2 wickets in 3 innings so far in Ashes 2023 series across 2 Tests. He has a poor bowling average of 81.0. In the ongoing Lord’s Test, the 40-year-old bagged wicket of Cameron Green. In the previous Test, the English pacer managed to get only 1 wicket.

James Anderson Has Been A Champion of The Game: Ricky Ponting

While speaking on ICC Review, former player and active cricket expert Ricky Ponting said that James Anderson has struggled to perform in the ongoing Ashes 2023 series. He also said it looks like the English pacer is not at his best right now.

“You never write off champions. That’s one thing I know about the game. James Anderson has been a champion of the game and will continue to be until he wants to pull up stumps. Skill wise, it still looks like it’s all there. But I think he, within himself, feels like he’s probably not quite at his best right now,” the former right-handed batter said.

Ponting, who won ICC ODI World Cup 2023 and 2007 as Australia captain, was also surprised to see Mitchell Starc replacing Scott Boland in Australia team during Lord’s Test. According to Ponting, the pitch conditions were suitable for a bowler like Boland.

“I was a little bit surprised. When I turned up here and looked at this Lord’s wicket with the overcast conditions that were expected for the first couple of days, I thought that those conditions would suit Boland down to the ground as well. So, I don’t see if there’s any sort of little niggle with Scott.

To be honest with you, with Starc in this game so far, he has got the ball to swing a little bit, which is what they want to see from him. But all I’ll say is I was surprised that they made the change,” the 48-year-old Ponting further said.
